![]() These two other examples infer that being hardworking pays more than being lazy and proud, which is in a way really reaching the humans of giving moral lessons out of the story. Other common examples include, “Eagle and the Ant”, and the “Horse and Carabao” (Eugenio, 1985). So when the time came when there is no rain, the grasshopper dies because of starvation while the ant remain alive (Eugenio, 1985). ![]() A very beautiful and famous example of this is the “The Grasshopper and the Ant, wherein the grasshopper is lazy and spending much of its time dancing and enjoying the summer sun while the ant is industrious and hardworking in keeping and looking for food to store (Eugenio, 1985). Then, there is also a commonly known type of animal tale found in the Philippines called, fable, which gives moral lessons applicable and relevant to mankind. For the Ilocanos, “The Story of the Monkey” is one of its known and collected Animal Tales by Cole in 1916. Some versions of this tale end up with the monkey being killed and some others, not. Considering the geographic dispersion, this tale has somehow different versions. In our place, the most famous Animal Tale that is always told is the tale, “The Monkey and the Turtle”. Examples of Animal Tale in the Philippines include, “The Monkey and the Turtle”, “The Monkey and the Crocodile”, (Eugenio, 1985) and “The Sad Tales of Crabs” (Nahl, 2007). Their interests lie in the deceptions or the absurd predicaments into which the animals’ stupidity leads him” (p. To begin with, in 1946, Thompson (as cited in Eugenio, 1985) defined Philippine Animal Tales as, “non-mythological stories in which human qualities are scribed to animals, designed usually to show the cleverness of one animal and the stupidity of another. In the Philippines, folktales are divided into groups: animal tales and fables, Märchen or tales of magic, romantic tales, novelistic tales, religious and didactic tales and humorous tales further divided into trickster and numskull tales (Eugenio, 1985). As defined by Bascom in 1965 (as cited in Eugenio, 1985), “folktales are prose narratives which are regarded as fiction” (p. Folktale is a form of a folk narrative, which can obviously be separated into two word, “folk” and “tale”, equally meaning, “a tale told by the people or among the people” according to Demetrio (1969). That being the case, the folk narratives that we have in the Philippines are part shared with that of the folklore of the influential society and groups mentioned. Indeed, Philippine culture and tradition has been greatly influenced directly and indirectly by its colonizers before and of its neighboring contact countries. Furthermore, according to Robert Fox in 1992 (as cited in Lopez, 2006), the Philippines' location permitted an exchange of different cultures and traditions between ancient Filipinos with the people of China, India and Arabia. Of course, this location as well is an asset because its archipelagic nature, Philippines has been given an opportunity to be of a commercial and political importance as it is considered to be one of the centers for distribution of goods across the Asia (Wernstedt and Spencer, as cited in Lopez, 2006). Philippines is located strategically on the margins of Southeast Asia, which is an asset and at the same time a liability, for its geographical location is suitable for the colonizers in expanding their powers and territories (Wernstedt and Spencer, as cited in Lopez, 2006).
